Anyone who has attempted to film
a documentary will sympathize with
another documentarian. It is a challenge
unlike any other art form. A documentary is supposed to be a historical work. Possibly objective but
I've never seen one that was. Any historical perspective written or filmed
that I've ever read or seen was slanted
towards the makers view point. As a
historian of sorts, a documentary maker
has an obligation to present the picture
as acurately as possible , however that
is impossible unless you have 24 hours
of film footage of one day in time and an infinite budget of time and money.
I make no claims of being a millionare
or grand director of screen and stage. I'm
merely a cable access producer who has created
and broadcasted over 300 television programs of varing topics and presented them on a highly viewed weekly series seen statewide. I have also
produced and hosted my weekly radio talk show on a commercial station for the last three years. (One of the longest running liberal talk shows in the U.S.) My audiance doesn't expect a classic academic 20 part documentary study on the anti war movement in the U.S; nor would they ever expect a right wing view point from me , so essentially I have the freedom to create what I want to. I can vouch that everything on the film is real and not fabricated. All the people in the documentary are real protestors
and not extras or staged or posed. I can verify that all the posters and speeches and interviews were filmed in real time are spontanious and uncensored. I believe for the sake of historical accuracy this documentary will be as historically accurate as any, with a minimum of editorializing by the producer, editor and director who are all one and the same, me.
The running time for the entire program
is aproximately two hours presented in
four distinct parts. I have a musical
soundtrack on each segment and hundreds of still images featured at the beginning of each of the
four segments. These parts are the only deliberate editorializing I have done; but it aids greatly in the overall presentation of what would otherwise seem
to be a chaotic and disjointed rally with 300,000 independent protestors , covering many acres and city blocks; and several stages for many national and international speakers . I wanted my audiance to hear and feel what so many felt that day and for those who are in favor of the war in Iraq, to perhaps give pause to question their own beliefs and consider the rational , emotional and courageous statements; made on 9/24/05 by Americans from every walk of life, who participated in the rally . Also to be aware that these Americans, unknowingly risked contamination by the Bio Weapon Tularemia, sprayed upon them by their own government, because they excercised their constitutional right of freedom of speech and assembly, to speak out
against the Bush administration.
It is always a risk when one tries to
participate in or capture on film a historical and
potentially volitile moment in history making.
This rally was not covered by the major
media, American or international. The
silence of the media over this timely
and most serious event spoke volumes
as to the real motives and cowardess of
the main stream media. Objectivity is a sick joke in any reporting by major American newspapers or television news coverage.
The fact that I have tried to be objective
in my depiction of this D.C anti war
rally would be considered a fabrication
by the American media , though their own dripping hypocricy would go without criticism amongst their own peers; and their incompetence would
be glossed over, if compared to the level
of professionalism shown in the production of this documentary. The documentary's host Leila Wood presented formidable questions to , Jesse Jackson, Medea Benjamin, Ramsey Clark and dozens of
protestors, their lengthy and poignant responses to her questions rivaled any nationally presented journalistic interviews.
I will make this documentary available
to the public on this website in the
coming months. All who are interested
in advanced orders please contact me
by email at lasteeltv@yahoo.com and
I will notify you of its completion and
the details of purchase. I will offer a
video free, except for postage and handling fee, to students, teachers or activist groups who intend to rebroadcast it on their public access channel or present the entire documentary to others in some forum.
I have completed three segments so
far, the final segment should be completed by the end of November 2005.
I will post its completion on this site
and possibly have a short preview available.
